  • Publishes the pipe diameter it will cut — under 7 in, against under 4 in for the maker’s 6 in blade
  • Same published material range for sheet, 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in), and the same 0.9 mm (0.04 in) body and 8 per cent cobalt
  • A longer blade flexes more and wanders more easily on a straight cut

Best for: Cutting pipe up to 7 in across, where a 6 in blade cannot reach through

This is the same blade as its 6 in stablemate with three more inches of it, and the listing is honest enough that the comparison is easy: both are 14 TPI bi-metal with 8 per cent cobalt, a 0.9 mm (0.04 in) body, set teeth and a 1/2 in universal shank, both stated for sheet from 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in), both sold in fives. One figure changes. Solid pipe and profile under 4 in on the short blade, under 7 in on this one.

That figure is the reason to buy it. A reciprocating saw cuts on the push and the pull, and the usable depth is the blade length minus the shank and the stroke — so a 6 in blade simply cannot reach through a 6 in pipe, however sharp it is. If what you cut is pipe, this is the blade; if it is sheet and small section, the short one holds a line better.

Because that is the trade. Nine inches of unsupported bi-metal flexes more than six, wanders more easily on a straight cut, and breaks more readily when it binds — which with a 0.9 mm (0.04 in) body and a hand-held saw happens. And at 14 TPI it remains a thin-to-medium blade: this hub’s buying tip is that a single pitch cannot do both ends of the range, and solid bar wants the coarse carbide blade on this shelf instead.

The questions welders ask

Should I just buy the long one?

Not automatically. Reach is the only thing it adds: a 9 in blade cuts a 7 in pipe where a 6 in blade reaches 4 in, and three inches of reach for a dollar or two is good value when you need it. What you accept is flex — a longer blade bends more under load, wanders off a line more readily, and is more likely to break when it binds in a deep cut. For sheet and small section the 6 in blade is the more controllable tool.

What stays the same between the two?

Everything else, on the published data. Both are 14 TPI with a 0.9 mm (0.04 in) body, 8 per cent cobalt in the bi-metal edge, set teeth and a 1/2 in universal shank, both stated for sheet from 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in), and both sold in fives. The bullets are the same sentences. The pipe diameter is the single figure that differs, and it is the figure that tells you which to buy.
