The best metal drill bits and taps for 2026

Drilling steel well is mostly about speed, pressure and fluid. We cover HSS against cobalt, coatings that earn their price and coatings that do not, step drills and annular cutters — plus taps and dies, with the tapping drill sizes that stop threads tearing out.

What we recommend

  4. QWORK titanium-coated combination drill and tap bits in their case

    QWORK DG39142, 1/4-20 drill-tap, 6-pack

Six combination drill-tap bits in a single thread size — which is not what "6 pcs" means on the two sets beside it on this shelf.

    • Six bits of one size, so a snapped bit is replaced immediately rather than ordered
    • Titanium coating on HSS, stated for thermal stability
    • All six bits are 1/4"-20 — this is not a size set, and the title does not make that obvious

Best for: One thread size used constantly, where the bit that snaps is replaced from the same box

  5. APRW combination drill and tap bits with their storage case

    APRW AP-6 combination drill-tap set

A combination drill-tap set whose contents bullet lists six imperial sizes and six metric ones, in a set the same sentence calls six pieces.

    Amazon reference
    B0FWQX4YL9
    EAN
    0780748644802
    • Surface nitriding rather than a coating, which hardens the steel itself rather than sitting on it
    • A back taper that extends beyond the tap, stated to prevent over-drilling damaging the thread
    • The contents bullet lists six imperial sizes and six metric sizes in a "6-Piece" set

Best for: A range of small threads in soft metal and thin panel, once the contents are confirmed

    ≈ $15

  6. DKIBBITH titanium combination drill and tap bits in six SAE sizes

    DKIBBITH DKVIP-003, SAE drill-tap, 6-pack

Six combination bits covering the common small SAE threads, on a listing that tells you the single mistake that strips a thread.

    Amazon reference
    B08JZDWZ9P
    EAN
    0791715205667
    • Six genuinely different sizes — 6-32, 8-32, 10-24, 10-32, 12-24 and 1/4-20 UNC
    • Covers both pitches of the #10 thread, 10-24 and 10-32, which matters more than it looks

  9. Greenlee DTAPKIT one-step drill and tap kit with its quick change adaptor

    TEMPO Greenlee DTAPKIT

A trade kit that publishes the one limit these bits actually have — the thickness of metal it will tap through, up to 10 gauge.

Choosing within drill bits & taps, by need

Covering every diameter

There is always one diameter missing when the moment comes. A complete set avoids stopping work for a single bit.

Baer Thread cutting set M3–M12, 30 pieces

The diameters that genuinely serve

A few quality bits, in the diameters actually used, cut better than a complete mediocre set.

Bosch Professional HSS-Cobalt ProBox, 19 pieces

Drill bits & taps and who each one is for

Drilling steel
Coated high-speed bits hold up better and cut for longer. It is where quality is felt immediately.
Tapping
The pilot hole diameter decides everything: too small and the tap breaks, too large and the thread does not hold.
Stainless and hard materials
Stainless work-hardens as soon as you rub without cutting. You need pressure, a low speed and lubricant, from the first second.

The trade-offs of drill bits & taps

Complete set against individual quality
A set covers every diameter with average bits. A few chosen bits in the common diameters cut better and last longer.
A titanium coating costs per bit
Coatings extend life in steel and do not rescue mediocre grinding. Point geometry matters more.
Hand tap against machine tap
The hand set is taken in three successive passes and forgives; the machine tap goes through in one and breaks at the slightest misalignment.

What keeps coming up about drill bits & taps

What pilot hole for tapping?

It is read from a tapping table specific to each pitch. Too small and the tap breaks; too large and the thread holds nothing.

How do I avoid breaking a tap?

Perfect alignment, lubricant, and a quarter turn back every turn to break the chip. A tap broken in a hole is very hard to extract.

Do I need lubricant to drill?

In steel and stainless, yes: it carries the heat away and hugely extends the bit’s life. Cast iron and brass are drilled dry.

Why does my bit no longer cut?

It has overheated and lost its edge, often for lack of lubricant or too high a speed. A blued bit is finished.

How do I drill a large diameter?

With a pilot hole, then opening out. Attacking directly stalls the machine and distorts the hole.

Can a bit be re-ground?

Yes, by hand on a grinder with practice, or with a dedicated sharpener. Point angle and symmetry of the lips decide the result.

Why does the bit wander at the start?

No center punch mark. A simple starting point is enough to stop it wandering on a smooth surface.

How do I drill stainless?

Low speed, firm pressure and lubricant. Rubbing without cutting work-hardens the surface, which then becomes nearly impossible to drill.

In short, on drill bits & taps

The tapping table decides the pilot hole, and a quarter turn back every turn avoids the broken tap. Center punch before drilling, lubricant in steel and stainless, low speed on large diameters — a blued bit cannot be rescued.

Drill bits & taps at a glance

Drill bits & taps, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 11 products is material, given by 3 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
