A combination drill-tap does three jobs in one pass and this hub’s intro is skeptical of the premise for good reason — but the tool earns its place on thin panel and soft metal, where the alternative is drilling, changing tools, finding the right tap and the right tapping drill, and hoping the two match.

The treatment is the detail worth having. Surface nitriding diffuses nitrogen into the steel to harden a layer of it, rather than depositing a coating on top; a titanium nitride coating is harder but wears through at the cutting edge within a few threads, leaving plain HSS. This is the only listing on this shelf to state nitriding, and on a tool whose edge rubs continuously it is the better answer.

What the page cannot settle is what is in the box. The contents bullet begins “6-Piece drill and tapping set” and then lists six imperial sizes and six metric ones. Twelve sizes, six pieces, one sentence. The NEIKO set on this shelf shows how it should read: thirteen pieces, being six imperial, six metric and a quick-change adapter. Two of the sentences here also appear word for word on another set at the same price further down this shelf.

The questions welders ask

How many bits are in the box?

The listing contradicts itself in a single bullet. It opens "6-Piece drill and tapping set" and then lists "Imperial sizes include: 6-32NC, 8-32NC, 10-24NC, 10-32NC, 12-24NC, and 1/4-20NC; Metric sizes include: M3 x 0.5, M4 x 0.7, M5 x 0.8, M6 x 1.0, M8 x 1.25, and M10 x 1.5" — which is twelve sizes. Either the set is six imperial bits and the metric line belongs to a different product, or it is a twelve-piece set described as six. The NEIKO set on this shelf is the one that does this properly: thirteen pieces, being six imperial, six metric and an adapter.

Is nitriding better than a titanium coating?

It is a different thing. A titanium nitride coating is applied to the surface and is very hard, but on a cutting edge it wears through quickly and what is left underneath is plain HSS. Nitriding diffuses nitrogen into the steel itself, hardening a layer rather than adding one — so it does not flake and it survives being resharpened. On a tool that cuts threads, where the edge rubs constantly, the nitrided surface is the more sensible choice, and this is the only listing on this shelf to state it.
