The best stick welding electrodes for 2026

The coating on a stick electrode does more than the steel core. We cover rutile rods that strike easily and forgive, basic low-hydrogen rods that are stronger and far fussier, and the specialist rods for stainless and cast iron — with the current range each diameter actually wants. The holder is on this page too, because it is sized in the same terms — the largest electrode diameter it will grip and the current it is rated to carry.

    • Three diameters, so you can match the rod to the plate instead of the other way round
    • €16 makes it a sensible first purchase alongside a machine
    • Assortments give you small quantities of each — a real job will exhaust one size

Choosing within stick electrodes, by need

A stock that covers the common cases

Electrodes are chosen by diameter and coating according to the work. An assortment avoids stopping for want of the right rod.

HYW Products E7018, 1/8 in, 50 lb can

Enough to weld simply

A box of ordinary rutiles covers routine repair on mild steel and strikes easily.

WISUNO E6013, 3/32 in, 1 lb

Stick electrodes and who each one is for

Routine repair
Rutile electrodes strike easily and forgive a great deal. It is the default choice for learning and for fixing things.
Welding a frame that will carry a load
Basic electrodes give a stronger weld and are far more sensitive to moisture and harder to strike.
Cast iron and unusual metals
Cast iron demands specific electrodes and a preheating procedure. Welding cast iron with ordinary electrodes cracks it every time.

The trade-offs of stick electrodes

Rutile against basic
Rutile strikes easily and forgives; basic gives a mechanically superior weld and demands perfectly dry electrodes.
Diameter against thickness
An electrode too large for the work goes through it; too fine, it means multiplying the passes. Diameter follows thickness.
Large box against storage
A large quantity costs less and takes up moisture over the months. A sealed tube with a desiccant solves the problem.

What keeps coming up about stick electrodes

Rutile or basic?

Rutile for learning and repairing: it strikes easily. Basic for structural joints, at the price of a harder start.

Do electrodes need drying?

Basics are very sensitive to it: damp, they give porous, cracked welds. Dry storage in a sealed tube is enough at home.

What diameter for what thickness?

A diameter close to the thickness of the work for ordinary steel, without exceeding the machine’s maximum current.

How do I strike without sticking?

By scratching like a match, then lifting slightly to hold the arc length. Too low a current makes it stick every time.

Can stainless be stick welded?

With specific stainless electrodes, yes. The result is less clean than TIG and perfectly sound.

Must the slag be chipped between passes?

Imperatively. Welding over slag traps inclusions that weaken the bead.

Can cast iron be welded?

With specific electrodes and gradual preheating followed by slow cooling. Without that procedure the piece cracks.

How long do electrodes keep?

Indefinitely when dry, a few weeks in damp air for basics. Appearance tells you nothing: it is the absorbed moisture that counts.

In short, on stick electrodes

Rutile for learning and repairing, basic for structure — and basics do not forgive moisture. Chip the slag between every pass, keep the box closed and dry, and know that a damp electrode only shows in the porosity of the bead.

Stick electrodes at a glance

    Stick electrodes, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 12 products is diameter, given by 2 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
