The best bench grinders and linishers for 2026

A bench grinder is bought for sharpening and ends up doing everything: dressing welds, deburring, shaping. We compare runout, tool rest rigidity and speed — and we say plainly which machines ship with wheels worth keeping, because most do not.

The models we recommend

  1. Einhell TC-BG 200 L

    200 mm (7.87 in) wheels · 400 W peak · swivelling LED · €93

The step up to 200 mm (7.87 in) wheels, which grind flatter and stay cool longer than 150 mm (5.91 in) ones.

Best for: Sharpening and shaping where a flat, cool grind matters more than portability

    7.5/10

    ≈ $300

  2. Güde GDS 150-15

    250 W · 2,980 rpm · 36 and 60 grit wheels · €40

Forty dollars, and the two wheels it arrives with are the first thing you should plan to replace.

Best for: Deburring, dressing bolt ends and rough shaping — not sharpening chisels

    7.5/10

  3. Einhell TC-BG 150 B

    350 W (S6) · brush wheel included · €66

A wire brush wheel on one side, which turns the machine into the fastest way to take rust off small parts.

Best for: Restoration and repair work where everything arrives rusty

    6.9/10

    ≈ $200

  4. Einhell TC-BG 150

    150 mm (5.91 in) wheels · deburring, derusting, resharpening · €46

The plain version of a machine sold in three sizes — buy it knowing what the extra €20 adds.

Best for: An occasional bench grinder where the price is the deciding factor

    6.9/10

    ≈ $160

  5. Scheppach SM150L

    400 W · cast iron base · LED work lights · €72

A grey cast iron base and lights over both wheels — mass and visibility, which is most of what a bench grinder needs.

Best for: A permanent bench installation, bolted down and used for both shaping and sharpening

    6.9/10

    ≈ $190

  6. ELMAG NTS 150/200

    Wet 200 mm (7.87 in) + dry 150 mm (5.91 in) · stainless tank · 250 W · €122

A wet wheel running through water, which is the only way to sharpen a thin edge without risking the temper.

Best for: Sharpening chisels, plane irons, turning tools and knives without blueing them

    8.1/10

  7. Bosch Professional GBG 60-20

    600 W induction motor · 200 mm (7.87 in) · 3,600 rpm · €208

An induction motor and sealed bearings in a die-cast housing — the machine built to run rather than to be bought.

Best for: Daily workshop use, where the machine runs every day and nobody wants to think about it

    8.7/10

Choosing within bench grinders, by need

Removing material without stalling

Power decides the ability to hold speed when you press. A grinder that slows heats the work without machining it.

Bosch Professional GBG 60-20

A sharpening grinder

For sharpening tools, finesse and control count more than brute force. A moderate machine is amply enough.

ELMAG NTS 150/200

Not walking across the bench

An unbolted grinder shifts at the first push and brings the tool back towards the hand. Drilled feet and a wide base are what let you bolt it down once and for all.

Bench grinders and who each one is for

Tool sharpening
Drill bits, chisels and cold chisels are touched up in seconds. It is the most frequent use of a workshop grinder.
Deburring
A wire wheel or a flap disc on the grinder cleans and deburrs very fast. It is an often forgotten use.
Carbide tooling
Ordinary wheels do not bite carbide. A diamond wheel is needed, which in practice is a different machine.

The trade-offs of bench grinders

Speed against heat
A fast grinder removes quickly and burns a tool edge within seconds. Frequent cooling is not optional.
Supplied wheel against chosen wheel
The wheels supplied are often coarse and of poor quality. Changing the wheel transforms the machine far more than a better model would.
Dry grinder against wet grinder
Dry is fast and burns easily; the wet grinder is slow and never draws the temper from an edge. For fine sharpening, water wins.

What keeps coming up about bench grinders

Why does my tool turn blue?

It has overheated and lost its temper: the edge will no longer hold. Quench often in water and do not press.

Does the tool rest need setting?

Imperatively, a few millimeters from the wheel at most. A larger gap lets the workpiece jam between the rest and the wheel.

How do I dress a wheel?

With a diamond or a dressing wheel, as soon as the surface becomes irregular or glazed. A dressed wheel cuts like a new one.

Can carbide be sharpened?

Not with an ordinary wheel, which slides over it. A specific diamond wheel is needed.

Are the eye shields useful?

They stop spatter directed at the face. They do not replace goggles or a face shield.

Should the grinder be fixed down?

Always, bolted to the bench. A grinder that shifts under load is uncontrollable.

How do I know if a wheel is cracked?

By suspending it and tapping it lightly: a sound wheel rings clear, a cracked one gives a dull note. A cracked wheel shatters in use.

Which wheel for what?

A coarse grit for rough work, a fine grit for sharpening. Many grinders come with two wheels for that reason.

In short, on bench grinders

A tool that turns blue has lost its temper: quench often and never press. Set the tool rest a few millimeters from the wheel, bolt the grinder to the bench, and ring-test a wheel before fitting it — a cracked wheel shatters.

Bench grinders at a glance

  • Wheel diameter: 150 to 200 mm (7.87 in), on 4 of the 7 models.
  • Highest figure for power: Bosch Professional GBG 60-20 (600 W induction motor).

Bench grinders, side by side

Four sets in five must state the figure before a column appears. A half-empty column manufactures false gaps.
