The best MIG welding wire for 2026

Wire is the consumable that decides how a MIG machine behaves. We cover solid wire under gas against gasless flux-cored, the common diameters and what each suits, stainless and aluminum wires, and the detail that ruins a first attempt: flux-cored wire usually needs the polarity reversed.

What we recommend

  1. STAHLWERK ER70S-6 (SG2) Ø 0.8 mm, 5 kg, product photograph

    STAHLWERK ER70S-6 (SG2) Ø 0.8 mm, 5 kg

The default steel MIG wire: 0.8 mm (0.03 in), ER70S-6, on a 200 mm (7.87 in) spool that most machines take.

    Grade
    ER70S-6 (SG2, G3Si1)
    Diameter
    0.8 mm (0.03 in)
    Weight
    5 kg (11 lb)
    Spool
    D200 — 200 mm (7.87 in) diameter
    Amazon reference
    B07TLNMGGW
    EAN
    4260294085152
    • ER70S-6 is the general-purpose steel grade: it tolerates mill scale and rust better than ER70S-3
    • 0.8 mm (0.03 in) suits 1–5 mm (0.04 to 0.20 in) steel, which is most workshop work
    • D200 spools do not fit the smallest portable machines, which take D100 only

Best for: General steel welding on any machine that takes a 200 mm (7.87 in) spool

    Search Amazon for this model
  2. STAHLWERK ER70S-6 (SG2) Ø 0.8 mm, 2 × 5 kg, product photograph

    STAHLWERK ER70S-6 (SG2) Ø 0.8 mm, 2 × 5 kg

The same wire as the single spool, twice — worth it only if you will use it before it corrodes.

    Grade
    ER70S-6 (SG2)
    Diameter
    0.8 mm (0.03 in)
    Quantity
    2 spools of 5 kg (11 lb)
    Amazon reference
    B0BZJSZFPP
    EAN
    4260746545807
    • Cheaper per kilogram than buying two single spools
    • Same grade and diameter as the single-spool version — no compromise for the discount
    • The second spool sits opened or unopened for months, and steel wire corrodes

Best for: A workshop welding weekly, where the second spool will be used within months

    Search Amazon for this model
  3. STM Schweißtechnik SG2 (G3Si1) Ø 1.0 mm, product photograph

    STM Schweißtechnik SG2 (G3Si1) Ø 1.0 mm

One millimeter wire: more deposit per pass on thick steel, and unusable on car-body sheet.

    Grade
    SG2 / G3Si1
    Diameter
    1.0 mm (0.04 in)
    Spools
    D100, D200 and K300 sizes offered
    Amazon reference
    B083KFWQ27
    EAN
    0670036746151
    • More metal deposited per pass — fewer passes on 6 mm (0.24 in) and above
    • Available on K300 spools for machines that take them
    • Needs more current: a 160 A machine will struggle to run it properly

Best for: Structural work in 5 mm steel and above, on a machine of 180 A or more

    Search Amazon for this model
  4. DK-Parts SG2 Ø 0.8 mm, 5 kg D200, product photograph

    DK-Parts SG2 Ø 0.8 mm, 5 kg D200

The cheapest branded 5 kg (11 lb) spool here, at €21 — six euros under the STAHLWERK equivalent.

    Grade
    SG2 (G3Si)
    Diameter
    0.8 mm (0.03 in)
    Weight
    5 kg (11 lb)
    Spool
    D200, 200 mm (7.87 in)
    Amazon reference
    B01AMONLYK
    EAN
    0705968739275
    • Same SG2 grade designation as the dearer spools
    • D200 fits most bench machines
    • Winding quality is what separates cheap wire from good wire, and it is not published

Best for: Practice, tacking and non-critical work where a few dollars a spool matter

    Search Amazon for this model
  5. STAHLWERK ER4043 (AlSi5) Ø 1.0 mm, 0.45 kg, product photograph

    STAHLWERK ER4043 (AlSi5) Ø 1.0 mm, 0.45 kg

Aluminum wire is soft, and that single fact governs everything about feeding it.

    Grade
    ER4043 (AlSi5)
    Diameter
    1.0 mm (0.04 in)
    Weight
    0.45 kg (1 lb)
    Spool
    D100, 16 mm (0.63 in) bore
    Amazon reference
    B0CQRLD4BF
    EAN
    4260746547467
    • ER4043 is the general-purpose aluminum filler, forgiving and crack-resistant
    • 1.0 mm (0.04 in) is the practical minimum for aluminum: thinner wire buckles even sooner
    • Soft wire birds-nests in a standard steel liner: a Teflon liner or spool gun is close to mandatory

Best for: Occasional aluminum work on a machine equipped for it

  6. YESWELDER gasless flux-core MIG wire on a two-pound spool

    YESWELDER E71T-GS gasless, 0.030 in, 2 lb

The only flux-cored wire in this hub, and its listing says nothing about the polarity change this hub’s own introduction warns about.

    Amazon reference
    B07W41G6P3
    EAN
    0658848701643
    • Needs no shielding gas, which is what makes outdoor and windy work possible at all
    • Stated to weld over light rust and mill scale, where solid wire under gas will not
    • Says nothing about polarity, and self-shielded flux-cored wire normally runs electrode negative — the reverse of solid wire

Best for: Outdoor and windy work, or a machine with no gas bottle at all

  7. BIG RED ER70S-6 solid MIG welding wire on an eleven-pound spool

    BIG RED AER70S602R, ER70S-6, 0.035 in, 11 lb

The same AWS classification as six other wires on this shelf, in the same diameter and the same spool weight, at less than half the price of the most expensive.

    Amazon reference
    B0DNLM27PC
    EAN
    0810151423296
    • ER70S-6 to the same AWS classification as every other solid wire on this shelf
    • Eleven pounds, the largest spool weight here
    • Publishes nothing beyond the classification — no tensile figure, no copper coating statement, no deoxidiser levels

Best for: General steel fabrication from 2 mm (0.08 in) upwards, bought on price with the classification understood

    ≈ $18

  8. VEVOR ER70S-6 solid MIG welding wire on a ten-pound spool

    VEVOR ER70S-6, 0.030 in, 10 lb

The only listing on this shelf that puts a number on the weld rather than on the spool — a stated tensile strength of 490 MPa or better.

    Amazon reference
    B0GCDRL8V4
    EAN
    0197988178002
    • Publishes a tensile strength — at least 490 MPa — which no other wire in this hub states
    • Names both shielding gas options: 100 per cent CO2, or 80 per cent argon with 20 per cent CO2
    • A ten-pound spool where two wires on this shelf give eleven for less

Best for: General fabrication where the deposit strength matters and the gas is already decided

    ≈ $25

  9. VEVOR ER70S-6 MIG welding wire, 0.035 inch, on an eleven-pound spool

    VEVOR ER70S-6, 0.035 in, 11 lb

The coarser of the two VEVOR wires on this shelf, in the larger spool — and the one whose listing drops the tensile figure its own stablemate publishes.

    Amazon reference
    B0CGCXKFQ2
    EAN
    0840349946337
    • Eleven pounds rather than ten, for a small increase over the brand’s 0.030 in spool
    • States the deoxidiser argument — higher manganese and silicon for dirty, oily or rusted steel
    • Does not publish the 490 MPa tensile figure that the same maker’s 0.030 in listing gives

Best for: Thicker section and structural work, where 0.035 in lays metal faster than 0.030

  10. PGN ER70S-6 solid MIG welding wire, 0.035 inch, on a ten-pound spool

    PGN Bearings ZY-GHM-0902-06, ER70S-6, 0.035 in, 10 lb

The coarsest of three PGN wires on this shelf, on a listing whose fourth bullet exists purely to state the diameter and the weight clearly.

    Amazon reference
    B07XFFZX3V
    EAN
    0760655001301
    • One of three diameters of the same wire on this shelf — .023, .030 and .035 in — so the range covers sheet to section
    • A bullet devoted to stating the diameter and spool weight plainly, "making the key specifications easy to verify before ordering"
    • Carries a different reference format from the maker’s own .023 in and .030 in wires — ZY-GHM-0902-06 against WW-ER70S6-nnn-10LB

Best for: Heavier fabrication, bought from a maker that offers the same wire in three diameters

    ≈ $33

  11. PGN ER70S-6 solid MIG welding wire, 0.030 inch, on a ten-pound spool

    PGN Bearings WW-ER70S6-030-10LB, ER70S-6, 0.030 in, 10 lb

The general-purpose diameter from the same maker and at the same price as its 0.035 in wire — which makes the choice purely about the metal you weld.

    Amazon reference
    B082P65XL3
    EAN
    0760655018903
    • 0.030 in is the general-purpose diameter, per this shelf's buying tip
    • The same price as the maker’s 0.035 in wire on this shelf, so diameter is a free choice rather than a cost
    • No tensile figure, no named shielding gas and no copper coating statement

Best for: The one spool to own if you weld mostly 2 to 5 mm (0.08 to 0.20 in) steel

    ≈ $33

  12. YESWELDER ER70S-6 copper-coated solid MIG wire on a ten-pound spool

    YESWELDER ZY-GHM-DYYL-2-319, ER70S-6, 0.030 in, 10 lb

The only wire on this shelf whose listing states that it is copper coated — which is the property that decides whether it still feeds smoothly at the end of the spool.

    Amazon reference
    B07W3KR4XR
    EAN
    0658848701629
    • States that the wire is copper coated, which no other listing on this shelf does
    • Names both shielding gas options and explains the consequence: higher currents are possible with 100 per cent CO2
    • No tensile figure, where one wire on this shelf publishes 490 MPa

Best for: A machine that runs 100 per cent CO2 at higher currents on sheet without burning through

    ≈ $36

  13. Blue Demon ER70S-6 MIG welding wire on an eleven-pound spool

    Blue Demon ER70S6-030-11, ER70S-6, 0.030 in, 11 lb

The only wire on this shelf that claims X-ray quality welds and the highest as-welded tensile strength of any plain carbon steel wire — with no figure attached to either.

    Amazon reference
    B00F429W7G
    EAN
    0652426111251
    • Claims porosity-free, X-ray quality welds, which is a specific and testable standard of soundness
    • States that the shielding gas is required — CO2 or a CO2 mix — rather than leaving it implied
    • Claims "the highest tensile strength (as welded) of all the plain carbon steel wires" without a figure or a comparison

Best for: Work that will be inspected, or castings and forging salvage where the deposit has to be sound

  14. PGN ER70S-6 solid MIG welding wire, 0.023 inch, on a ten-pound spool

    PGN Bearings WW-ER70S6-023-10LB, ER70S-6, 0.023 in, 10 lb

The finest wire in this hub by a clear margin — the 0.6 mm (0.02 in) class this shelf's buying tip says car-body sheet needs, and the only one of its size here.

    Amazon reference
    B089LVH45M
    EAN
    0760655019337
    • A 0.023 in diameter — the 0.6 mm (0.02 in) class — which is what this hub’s buying tip says the thin end of the range needs
    • The only wire of this size anywhere in this hub, in either half
    • The highest price per spool on this shelf, for the least metal per meter

Best for: Car-body panel and thin sheet, where a 0.8 mm (0.03 in) wire blows holes

Choosing within MIG wire, by need

Welding thick material

A large-diameter wire deposits more metal and demands more current. It fills a bevel in fewer passes.

STAHLWERK ER4043 (AlSi5) Ø 1.0 mm, 0.45 kg

Welding thin sheet

A fine wire works at low current and limits the risk of blowing through. That is what makes bodywork possible.

DK-Parts SG2 Ø 0.8 mm, 5 kg D200

Welding long without changing spool

A large spool costs less per kilo and avoids stoppages. The feeder still has to accept it.

DK-Parts SG2 Ø 0.8 mm, 5 kg D200

MIG wire and who each one is for

Carbon steel
Solid wire under gas is the standard. Grade and diameter are chosen by thickness and by the gas used.
Working outdoors
Gasless flux-cored wire exists for that: it carries its own flux and works in wind, leaving slag.
Stainless and aluminum
These wires demand a dedicated grade, a suitable gas and often a specific feeder liner. It is not simply a change of spool.

The trade-offs of MIG wire

Solid wire against flux-cored
Solid under gas gives a clean bead and fears wind; flux-cored works outside and leaves slag to chip. They do not use the same polarity.
Large spool against storage
A large spool costs less per kilo and rusts if left for months in damp air. Oxidized wire gives porous welds.
Diameter against adjustment range
Every diameter has its current range. Trying to do everything with one diameter necessarily limits one end of the work.

What keeps coming up about MIG wire

What wire diameter should I choose?

A fine wire for thin sheet, a thicker one for heavy material. Every diameter has a current range outside which it works badly.

Solid or flux-cored wire?

Solid under gas for a clean bead indoors, flux-cored gasless to work in wind. Careful: they need reversed polarity.

How should wire be stored?

Dry, spool back in its bag or in the closed machine. Oxidized wire gives porous welds and birdnests in the liner.

Why does my wire birdnest in the torch?

Drive rolls badly tensioned or wrongly sized, a fouled liner, or a worn contact tip. It is almost always one of those three.

When should the contact tip be changed?

As soon as the arc turns unstable or the hole goes oval. It is a cheap consumable people keep far too long.

Which grade for ordinary steel?

Standard carbon-steel grades suit the vast majority of work, with an argon-CO2 mix.

Can galvanized steel be welded?

Technically yes, and zinc fumes are toxic. Effective extraction is compulsory, not advisable.

Do the drive rolls need tensioning?

Just enough to feed without crushing the wire. An over-tightened roll deforms the wire, which then drags in the liner.

In short, on MIG wire

Wire diameter decides the useful current range, and therefore the thickness you can weld. Solid and flux-cored wire need reversed polarity, oxidized wire gives porous welds — and galvanized fumes demand extraction, with no negotiation.

MIG wire at a glance

  • Diameter: 0.8 to 1 mm (0.04 in), on 5 of the 14 models.
  • Spool: 100.16 to 200,200 mm (7.87 in), on 3 of the 14 models.
  • Weight: 0.45 to 5 kg (11 lb), on 3 of the 14 models.

MIG wire, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 14 products is diameter, given by 5 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
