This is the least expensive solid wire in this hub, and it is the same thing as the most expensive: ER70S-6, the standard copper-coated mild steel MIG wire, on an eleven-pound spool in 0.035 in.

What makes that worth saying plainly is how little separates the seven ER70S-6 wires on this shelf on paper. The AWS classification fixes the chemistry and the mechanical properties of the deposit; the diameters are .023, .030 and .035 in; the spools are ten or eleven pounds. The published specifications are therefore nearly identical, and the prices run from under nineteen dollars to over forty.

What this listing adds beyond the class is nothing — no tensile figure, no statement about the copper coating, no deoxidiser levels, and no named shielding gas, where three competitors here specify 100 per cent CO2 or an 80/20 argon mix. Its five bullets describe a stable arc, a smooth feed and a sturdy spool in five different ways. At 0.035 in it is the general-to-heavy end of the range: fine from about 2 mm (0.08 in) of steel upwards, and the wrong choice for car-body panel, which is what this shelf’s buying tip is about.

The questions welders ask

If it is the same classification, why is it cheaper?

That is the real question on this shelf, and no listing answers it. AWS A5.18 defines what ER70S-6 is: its composition, including the manganese and silicon that do the deoxidizing, and the mechanical properties of the deposit. Seven wires here carry that classification at prices from under nineteen dollars to over forty. What varies between them is not the specification — it is copper coating quality, winding consistency, tolerance on the diameter and how well the spool is packed, and almost none of that is published anywhere.

What gas does it need?

The listing says only "gas welding". For ER70S-6 that means either 100 per cent CO2 or an argon-CO2 mix, usually 80/20 — the first is cheaper and spatters more, the second gives a cleaner bead and costs more. Three wires on this shelf name both options explicitly; this one does not name either.
