The best clamps, vices and welding tables for 2026

Steel moves as it cools, and what holds it decides whether the assembly is square afterwards. We compare bench vices, welding clamps, magnetic squares and slotted fixture tables — on capacity, rigidity and how much they give when the weld shrinks.

What we recommend

  1. Spurtar Welding magnets, 6 × 13 kg, product photograph

    Spurtar Welding magnets, 6 × 13 kg

Six magnets for €20: they hold a corner square while you tack, and they are not clamps.

    Quantity
    6 magnets
    Hold
    13 kg (28.7 lb) each
    Angles
    45°, 90° and 135°
    Amazon reference
    B08GR33SXH
    EAN
    0696177836667
    • Six magnets means both ends of two joints held at once
    • Three angles cover square corners, mitres and obtuse bracing
    • Magnets hold for tacking and cannot resist a cooling weld

Best for: Holding a frame square long enough to tack it

  2. STAHLWERK Welding magnets, 4 × 22.6 kg, product photograph

    STAHLWERK Welding magnets, 4 × 22.6 kg

Nearly double the hold of the cheap sets — which changes what section they can position.

    Quantity
    4 magnets
    Hold
    22.6 kg (49.8 lb) (50 lbs) each
    Amazon reference
    B0DJT1DPDJ
    EAN
    4262452492925
    • 22.6 kg (49.8 lb) holds heavier section steady while you tack
    • The only magnet set here live on all six markets
    • Four magnets rather than six, at a similar price

Best for: Positioning heavier box section and plate before tacking

  5. Magswitch MagSquare 165, product photograph

    Magswitch MagSquare 165

A magnet with an off switch — which is what makes a strong magnet usable rather than a nuisance.

    Type
    Switchable magnetic square clamp
    Control
    On/off lever
    Amazon reference
    B0B9HVVZ6X
    EAN
    0878628006922
    • Switchable: full holding force, then nothing, at the flick of a lever
    • Strong enough to hold real section, unlike the 13–22 kg (28.7 to 48.5 lb) fixed magnets
    • €226 — ten times a set of fixed magnets

Best for: Repeated fabrication where fixed magnets are too weak and too hard to remove

    ≈ $135

  6. Strong Hand Tools locking pipe pliers with V-pads gripping a tube

    Strong Hand Tools PG114V

The only clamp in this hub whose entire specification is figures — capacity, throat, length and thread, with nothing else claimed.

    Amazon reference
    B003OU85IW
    EAN
    0632102431736
    • Publishes every dimension that decides fit: capacity 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 in, throat 3-1/2 in, length 11 in
    • Publishes the adjusting thread as M10, which no other clamp on this shelf states
    • A 2-1/2 in ceiling — anything larger needs the pipe clamps elsewhere on this shelf

Best for: Tube and exhaust work, where the pliers have to sit on a round section and stay there

    ≈ $30

  7. Three HEIHAK 18 inch locking C-clamps with swivel pads

    HEIHAK 06231043, 18 in, 3-pack

Three big locking clamps that publish both the figures that matter — a 7.8 in throat and a 6.3 in opening, the deepest and widest in this hub.

    Amazon reference
    B0B4V3WN28
    EAN
    0755621348443
    • A 7.8 in throat depth, more than twice the next deepest clamp on this shelf
    • A 6.3 in maximum opening, which takes stacked plate or heavy box section
    • An 18 in plier is heavy and awkward on small work — these are not detail clamps

Best for: Clamping a plate or a frame well in from the edge, where a short-throat clamp cannot reach the seam

    ≈ $31

  8. Set of nickel-plated 6 inch locking C-clamp pliers

Biugaaufai 6 Inch locking C-clamp set

A set of 6-inch locking clamps whose own listing cannot agree on how many are in the box.

    Amazon reference
    B0DNFD3KD7
    EAN
    0729767456652
    • Several clamps in one purchase, which is how a frame actually gets held
    • Nickel-plated alloy steel, stated
    • The title says "6 Pack" and the first bullet says "four 6-inch C-Clamp pliers" — the quantity is not settled anywhere on the page

Best for: Small work and body panels, where several modest clamps beat one large one

    ≈ $33
    Check price on Amazon
  9. Monster & Master V-pad locking pipe clamp on a square tube

Monster & Master MM 10 in V-pad locking clamp

A V-jaw clamp that publishes the tube sizes it holds and states plainly that it takes square section as well as round.

    Amazon reference
    B08LD3GBZS
    EAN
    6972748327999
    • Publishes the sizes it holds — 1, 2 and 3 in — rather than a single capacity range
    • States that the V-jaws take plain round AND square tube, including mixed joints
    • A 3 in ceiling, below the 6.3 in opening of the large clamps on this shelf

Best for: Frames mixing round and square tube, where one clamp has to seat on both

    ≈ $40

  10. KAKA Industrial cast iron 90 degree angle clamp holding two square tubes

    KAKA INDUSTRIAL AC-100

The only clamp on this shelf that holds a right angle on its own, bolted to a bench — with a copper-plated screw so spatter does not weld to the thread.

    Amazon reference
    B0159ZUQ22
    EAN
    0745369240840
    • Holds a true 90 degrees mechanically, which is what this hub’s buying tip says magnets cannot do
    • Publishes all three jaw dimensions — 4 in opening, 2-1/4 in height, 3-1/2 in width
    • The listing calls 26 lb a "lightweight design" in the same sentence that publishes the figure

Best for: Repeating the same square corner, where the clamp sets the angle instead of a magnet suggesting it

    ≈ $155

  11. Sawyer Welder’s 3rd Hand pipe alignment clamp fitted to a pipe butt joint

Sawyer Mfg Company Welder’s 3rd Hand pipe clamp

A pipe alignment clamp whose five bullets contain no capacity, no weight, no dimension and no material grade — on the highest price in the American half of this hub.

    Amazon reference
    B07MKPLQR5
    EAN
    0602573288498
    • Built for the one joint nothing else on this shelf addresses — a pipe butt weld, where both halves must stay concentric
    • Portable, so it goes to the joint rather than the joint to a bench
    • No pipe diameter range published — the one figure that decides whether it fits anything you own

Best for: Pipe butt welds, if you can establish from the seller which diameters it fits

    ≈ $185
    Check price on Amazon
  12. ZTUKOMN four-inch drill press vise with soft jaw pads

ZTUKOMN 4 in drill press vise

The only vise in this hub that publishes all three of the figures that decide whether a part will fit in it — opening, jaw width and its own weight.

    Amazon reference
    B0C73J9KWR
    EAN
    0746198463592
    • Publishes the maximum jaw opening, 4.25 in, and the jaw width, 4.2 in
    • Publishes its own weight, 7 lb, which is what stops a vise walking under load
    • No clamping force published, where the toggle clamps alongside it state 500 lb

Best for: Holding a part square under a drill press, where the alternative is a hand and hope

    ≈ $37
    Check price on Amazon
  13. Four POWERTEC Type-225D horizontal toggle clamps

    POWERTEC 20326, Type-225D toggle clamps, 4-pack

Four quick-release clamps that publish what no other clamp in this hub publishes — a holding force, and every dimension needed to drill the mounting holes.

    Amazon reference
    B079SWJC4W
    EAN
    0843441100881
    • Publishes a holding capacity — 500 lb per clamp — which no other clamp in this hub does
    • Publishes every mounting dimension: base 1-3/8 by 1-1/2 in, slots 1/4 by 3/8 in spaced 7/8 by 7/8 in, bolt length 2-1/2 in including the rubber foot
    • A toggle clamp holds down, not sideways — it is a fixture component, not a hand clamp

Best for: Building a jig or a fixture, where the clamp is screwed down once and used a thousand times

    ≈ $19

Choosing within clamps & vices, by need

A vice that genuinely holds

Mass and the quality of the screw decide what a vice can grip without developing play. It is a purchase made once.

Sawyer Mfg Company Welder’s 3rd Hand pipe clamp

Holding during welding

Clamps and magnetic squares are often enough to position two parts long enough to tack them.

Clamps & vices and who each one is for

Metalworker’s bench
A heavy vice fixed to a solid bench is the central tool of metalwork. Everything else revolves around it.
Setting up before welding
Magnetic squares, locking pliers and clamps hold the assembly long enough to tack it. That is what decides the final squareness.
Tubes and sections
V-jaws or chain vices hold the round shapes a flat vice crushes. It is an often forgotten accessory.

The trade-offs of clamps & vices

Clamping force against marking
Serrated jaws grip firmly and mark the workpiece permanently. Soft jaw covers avoid that on visible surfaces.
Heavy vice against versatility
A fixed vice has unbeatable rigidity and is never in the right place. Pliers and clamps go anywhere and hold less firmly.
Magnetic against mechanical
Magnetic squares are placed instantly and let go under moderate load. They position, they do not hold.

What keeps coming up about clamps & vices

Do I need a heavy vice?

Mass is what absorbs the blows and prevents play. A light vice backs away or twists as soon as you file or strike.

How do I avoid marking parts?

With soft aluminum or copper jaw covers over the serrated jaws. It is a simple accessory you can also make yourself.

Do magnetic squares hold for welding?

They position long enough for a tack, no more. Moderate force makes them let go.

Can I hammer on a vice?

On the anvil section provided, yes; on the jaws or the body, never. A cast-iron vice cracks under badly placed blows.

How do I grip a tube without crushing it?

With V-jaws, or by sliding an offcut of tube inside to stop it going oval.

Should the screw be greased?

A little grease on the screw and nut markedly extends a vice’s life. Chips and filings are its main enemies.

Should the vice overhang the bench?

The jaws should be flush with or slightly past the edge, so a long piece can be gripped vertically.

Locking pliers or clamps?

Locking pliers go on one-handed and grip hard over a small area; clamps spread the load better and need two hands.

In short, on clamps & vices

Mass makes the vice: a light model backs away as soon as you file. Strike only on the anvil section, never on the jaws, protect visible parts with soft jaws — and know that magnetic squares position without ever holding.

Clamps & vices at a glance

Clamps & vices, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 13 products is hold, given by 2 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
