A drill press vise is the least interesting thing on this shelf and the one that stops an accident. As a bit breaks through the far side of a hole it tries to thread itself into the metal, and the part turns — which is why it has to be held, and why the holder has to be bolted down rather than resting on the table.

This one publishes the three figures that decide whether it is the right size: a maximum jaw opening of 4.25 in, a jaw width of 4.2 in, and its own weight at 7 lb. The first two tell you what will fit; the third tells you what the vise will do when the drill grabs and the bolts are not in. No other vise or clamp in this hub publishes all three.

The quick-adjust button is the convenience that matters in practice — the jaws travel to roughly the right opening without winding the screw the whole way, which on a vise used twenty times an hour is the difference between using it and not. The grooved soft pads hold round and irregular work without marking it, at the cost of a little grip; for a hard hold in steel they come off. What is not published is a clamping force, which the toggle clamps on this shelf do state, or a jaw depth.

The questions welders ask

Why does bolting it down matter?

Because a drill grabs. As a twist drill breaks through the far side of a hole it tries to screw itself into the work, and the part turns with it — which on an unbolted vise means the whole vise spins, taking your hand or the part with it. This hub’s buying tip is about clamping mechanically rather than trusting a magnet, and the same logic applies here: the vise holds the part and the table holds the vise. This one has holes for it.

What do the soft jaw pads change?

They protect the work and reduce the grip. Grooved soft pads will hold a round section without flattening it and a finished surface without marking it, which is what they are for; on a hard clamp in steel they also deform slightly, which is grip you are giving away. For drilling a tube they are the right fitting; for holding a block while a 13 mm (0.51 in) bit breaks through, the bare hardened jaws are.
