  • Publishes the adjusting thread as M10, which no other clamp on this shelf states
  • A 2-1/2 in ceiling — anything larger needs the pipe clamps elsewhere on this shelf

There are five bullets on this listing and four of them are a measurement. Capacity 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 in, 38 to 64 mm (1.50 to 2.52 in). Throat depth 3-1/2 in, 89 mm. Overall length 11 in, 280 mm. Thread M10. That is the whole pitch, and on a shelf where the most expensive clamp publishes no figure at all it is worth more than any adjective.

What the numbers describe is a tube clamp. Large V-pads seat on a round section in two lines of contact instead of pressing a flat jaw against a curve, and the adjustable top spindle has a crank handle rather than a knurled screw, so the setting can be changed with a gloved hand while the jaws are already on the work. The steel is heat-treated and plated, which the listing states rather than implies.

Two limits are worth reading before ordering. Two and a half inches is the ceiling, so anything bigger belongs to the pipe clamps further up this shelf. And the opening figure appears twice on the page in two forms — 1-1/2 in in the bullets and the title, “1 1/5” in the description’s specification table. The millimeter equivalent, 38 mm (1.50 in), settles which is right.

The questions welders ask

What does throat depth decide?

How far from the edge of the work the pliers can reach. A 3-1/2 in throat means the jaws will close on a joint up to three and a half inches in from the nearest open edge, and no further — which on a pipe is usually irrelevant and on a plate decides whether the clamp can reach the seam at all. It is published here and on one other clamp on this shelf; the rest leave it out.

Is the capacity 1-1/2 in or 1-1/5 in?

One and a half. The bullet list and the title both say "1-1/2″ – 2-1/2″ (38 – 64 mm (1.50 to 2.52 in))", and the millimeter figure confirms it: 38 mm (1.50 in) is 1.5 in, not 1.2. The description’s specification table reads "Opening (in.): 1 1/5-2 1/2", which is a typing slip in one of the two places the same number appears.
