How often should I change a MIG torch liner?

A liner fills with the fine debris that wire deposits as it passes, and it kinks if the torch is dropped or trodden on. Both increase drag, which shows as erratic feeding and a wandering arc.

Change the tip first, because it is cheaper and fails more often. If the fault persists, blow the liner through with compressed air from the machine end; if it persists after that, replace it. With regular use, once a year is a reasonable interval.

The questions welders ask

Does aluminum need a different liner?

Yes — a Teflon or graphite liner rather than steel. Aluminum wire is soft and abrades against a coiled steel liner, which both wears the wire and generates the debris that then jams it. Changing liner type is part of converting a machine to aluminum.
