A backing bar supports the underside of a weld so the molten pool cannot fall through, and conducts heat away from thin material. It turns « blowing a hole » into « laying a bead » on sheet.
Copper is the usual material because steel welds do not fuse to it, and it conducts heat exceptionally well. Aluminum angle works nearly as well for occasional use. On a root pass in thick plate, ceramic backing tape serves the same purpose.
The questions welders ask
Will the weld stick to a steel backing bar?
Frequently, yes — that is the whole reason copper is used. If you have only steel, a light smear of anti-spatter helps, and expect to prise it off. For anything you will do twice, a copper bar is worth buying.
