What is a gas lens and is it worth fitting?

A gas lens replaces the standard collet body with one containing layers of fine mesh. The mesh straightens the gas flow, so it leaves the cup as a smooth column rather than a turbulent one.

Two practical results: the shield covers a wider area for the same flow, which lets you use less gas; and you can extend the tungsten further out of the cup and still be protected, which means better visibility and access into corners.

The questions welders ask

Does it need a different cup?

Yes — gas lens bodies take their own cups, usually larger and often available in pyrex so you can see the pool. The parts are inexpensive and they are a genuine improvement in weld appearance on stainless, where shielding quality shows as color.
