bestarc 50100-3MM welding coupons, 20-pack review

Twenty pieces of 3 mm (0.12 in) mild steel cut to the same size — the cheapest way to learn a weld without ruining the thing you meant to make.

Where we come out Twenty identical pieces of 3 mm (0.12 in) steel with the thickness published three ways — the cheapest thing in this hub, and the one that makes every setting on the machines here testable.

Every capacity on this page is quoted in mild steel of a stated thickness, and every machine setting on this site is a wire speed or an amperage for a given thickness. This is that steel: twenty pieces, 2 by 4 inches, 11 gauge — 3.05 mm (0.12 in), 0.11 in, published all three ways on the listing.

What a coupon buys is repeatability. A test weld on an offcut tells you that something worked once on metal you did not measure; twenty identical pieces let you change one variable at a time and write the result down. For anyone setting up a new machine, or proving a parameter before cutting into the thing they actually want to build, that is the difference between learning and guessing.

Three millimeters is also the right thickness to own. The entry MIG and stick machines in this hub are rated for roughly that in a single pass, the shears on this shelf are rated in gauges either side of it, and 3 mm (0.12 in) is thick enough to show burn-through and thin enough for a 140-amp machine on a domestic socket. What the listing does not publish is any grade beyond “mild steel”, or the surface condition — mill scale has to come off before a clean weld whatever the steel is.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • Publishes the thickness three ways — 11 gauge, 3.05 mm (0.12 in), 0.11 in — which is how a welding parameter is actually set
  • Twenty identical pieces, so a test is repeatable rather than a one-off
  • Precision cut to 2 by 4 in, with square edges that need no dressing before a butt or lap joint
  • Three millimeters is the thickness most entry welders are rated against, so machine settings transfer
  • The least expensive item in this hub

Compromises

  • Mild steel only — a stainless or aluminum parameter cannot be proved on it
  • Nothing published about the grade beyond "mild steel", so composition and mill scale are unstated
  • Five bullets, three of which are one line of marketing each
  • No surface condition stated: scale has to be ground off before a clean weld either way

The questions welders ask

Why buy steel cut to size rather than offcuts?

Because a test only tells you something if the next test is the same. Setting wire speed and voltage on a 3 mm (0.12 in) butt joint, then repeating it on an offcut of unknown thickness, proves nothing — the parameter that worked was for the metal you happened to pick up. Twenty identical 2 by 4 in pieces at a published 11 gauge make a settings chart possible, which is the whole point of a coupon.

Is 3 mm (0.12 in) the right thickness to practice on?

It is the most useful single thickness for the machines on this site. The entry MIG and stick machines in this hub are rated around 3 mm (0.12 in) in a single pass, the sheet shears here are rated in gauges either side of it, and 3 mm (0.12 in) is thick enough to show a burn-through and thin enough to weld with a 140-amp machine on a domestic socket. What it will not tell you is how the same machine behaves on 1 mm (0.04 in) panel or 8 mm (0.31 in) plate.

What does "11 gauge" mean next to a millimeter figure?

Gauge is an old sheet-thickness scale that runs backwards — the bigger the number, the thinner the steel — and it is still how American sheet is sold. The listing publishes all three forms: "11Gauge≈3.05mm (0.12 in)≈0.11inch". That is worth more than it looks on a shelf where the machines are rated in millimeters and the stock is sold in gauges.

What buyers actually choose

Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 200.
