STAHLWERK CUT 60 P Digital review

A dedicated mesh mode, which is the difference between cutting grating and swearing at it.

Where we come out Buy it for the mesh mode. If you never cut grating, the cheaper machines do the same steel.

Five hundred euros, 60 A, 20 mm (0.79 in) in mild steel and 10 mm (0.39 in) in stainless — and one feature the rest of this page does not have: a mode for cutting mesh.

Grating is the hard case

Expanded metal, grating, perforated sheet and old wire fencing all present the same problem: the material under the torch keeps disappearing. A standard plasma arc transfers to the workpiece and goes out when the workpiece is not there, so cutting a grating means the arc re-striking many times a second — a stuttering, ragged cut and a nozzle that wears out in an afternoon.

The « mesh metal » mode keeps the pilot arc running continuously so the cut carries across the gaps. Anyone who has tried to cut a walkway grating with an ordinary machine will recognize why it is on the box.

The other mode, and the thicknesses

« Sheet metal » is the conventional mode for continuous plate, where holding the pilot would only wear consumables. The published thicknesses — 20 mm (0.79 in) mild steel, 10 mm (0.39 in) stainless — are severance figures; plan clean work at roughly two thirds.

Its cheaper sibling, the CUT 50 P, publishes an aluminum figure and this one does not. That is an odd gap in an otherwise fuller specification, and we leave it blank rather than interpolate.

Sources

Current, cut thicknesses, ignition, operating modes and part number come from the manufacturer’s published specification. No duty cycle or aluminum thickness is stated there, and none is invented here. Market availability was verified per market on the EAN.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • A mesh mode that keeps the arc alive across gaps instead of restarting at every bar
  • Twenty millimeters in mild steel, ten in stainless, both published
  • Live on all six markets under one reference

Compromises

  • €500 — twice the 65 A pilot machines earlier on this page
  • No duty cycle published
  • No aluminum figure quoted, unlike its cheaper CUT 50 P sibling

The questions welders ask

What does a mesh mode do that a pilot arc does not?

A pilot arc lets you start without contact. A mesh mode keeps the pilot alive continuously while you travel, so when the metal disappears under the torch — between the bars of a grating — the arc does not extinguish and re-strike. On expanded mesh that happens several times a second. Without the mode, you get a stutter, a ragged edge and consumables that die fast.

Is 60 A worth it over 45 A?

It is if your steel is over about 8 mm (0.31 in). The CUT 50 P quotes 15 mm (0.59 in) severance; this one quotes 20 mm (0.79 in), which makes a comfortable clean cut around 13 to 14 mm (0.51 to 0.55 in) rather than 10. If you rarely go above 6 mm (0.24 in), the extra amps are money that would be better spent on a good air dryer.
