Check the hole size first

System 16 or System 28 — measure a table hole before ordering. It is a hard fitment, not a tolerance.

The questions welders ask

What is System 16?

A welding-table standard built around 16 mm (0.63 in) diameter holes on a regular grid. Clamps, stops, squares and vices all use the same 16 mm (0.63 in) spigot, so any accessory drops into any hole. System 28 is the heavier industrial equivalent. The number is the hole diameter, and accessories are not interchangeable between the two.

Why not just use a bench vice?

Because a bench vice is at the edge of the bench and the work is in the middle. A table-mounted vice grips exactly where the assembly is, which means fewer awkward overhangs and less work held by hand — the practical difference a fixture table exists to make.
