  • Ceramic aluminum oxide grain — the only ceramic abrasive in this hub, and a genuinely different material from brown or white alumina
  • A Type 27 depressed center, which is what lets a grinding wheel work at a shallow angle without the nut fouling
  • No maximum speed published anywhere, on a 1/4 in grinding wheel

This is the only ceramic abrasive in this hub, and the grain is the whole point. Conventional aluminum oxide dulls as it works and starts to rub; a ceramic grain fractures in a controlled way as it wears, exposing fresh edges and continuing to cut. On stainless and high tensile alloys, which harden under a dull abrasive and burn under a hot one, that is the difference between removing metal and polishing it.

The form matters as much as the grain. A Type 27 has a depressed center, so the mounting nut sits below the working face and the wheel can be laid at a shallow angle to dress a weld flat — something a flat Type 1 wheel physically cannot do. At 1/4 in thick it is a grinding wheel proper, which is the distinction this hub’s buying tip insists on: never grind with a cutting disc or cut with a grinding one.

The listing does not match the product. There is no maximum speed anywhere on it, on a wheel used under side load at over ten thousand rpm. There is no grit. There is nothing about iron and sulfur, although the wheel is specified for stainless. And where a fifth specification should be, the same sentence is printed twice: “Combines fast stock removal with long life”, followed by “Combines fast stock removal with long life”.

The questions welders ask

What does ceramic grain change?

How the abrasive wears. Conventional aluminum oxide dulls as it is used; a ceramic grain fractures in a controlled way, exposing fresh cutting edges as it goes, so it keeps cutting rather than starting to rub. On stainless and high tensile alloys, which work-harden under a dull abrasive, that difference compounds: a sharp grain removes metal, a dull one heats the surface. It is the reason this wheel costs what it does, and it is the only ceramic abrasive in this hub.

What is a Type 27?

A grinding wheel with a depressed center — the hub is recessed so that the mounting nut sits below the working face. That lets the wheel be used at a shallow angle to the work, which is how a weld is dressed flat, without the nut touching the surface. A Type 1 flat wheel cannot do it. This hub’s buying tip is that a cutting disc and a grinding disc are not interchangeable; the depressed center is the physical reason why.

Why is the missing speed rating serious here?

Because this is a 1/4 in wheel used on its face, under side load, on a grinder running at 11,000 rpm or more. The rating is the limit the wheel was burst-tested to, and this hub’s introduction names it as one of the two markings that matter. The figure is marked on the wheel itself — but on a listing this expensive and this technical, with a repeated bullet where a specification should be, its absence from the page is conspicuous.
