paulimot BS-128K review

Coolant plumbed in and a cast frame — the two things that separate a workshop saw from a hobby one.

Where we come out The first machine in this family built to be used every day rather than occasionally.

Mass and coolant

Both are unglamorous and both are what make a band saw cut straight for years. A cast frame does not flex as the band tensions and the cut loads up; coolant keeps the teeth from blunting and clears the chips that would otherwise ride round and score the work.

The stand is not a throwaway

A saw at the wrong height gets used badly. Having the stand in the box means the machine arrives at working height on a base designed for its weight, rather than balanced on whatever bench was free.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • A coolant system as standard, which doubles or triples band life in steel
  • A workpiece stop, so repeat lengths come out identical without measuring each one
  • Cast body rather than folded sheet

Compromises

  • €724 and heavy — this machine is not moving once it is placed
  • Coolant needs mixing, topping up and eventually disposing of
  • Not sold on the American store at the time of checking

The questions welders ask

What does coolant actually do for a band saw?

It carries heat out of the cut and flushes chips from the gullets. Heat is what blunts teeth, and packed gullets are what makes a band rub instead of cut. A flooded cut can extend band life several times over in steel, which on a machine used regularly pays for the pump quickly.

Why does a workpiece stop matter?

Because repeat cuts are where hand-measuring goes wrong. Set the stop once and every piece comes off the saw the same length — twenty identical uprights instead of twenty nearly identical ones, which is the difference between a frame that goes together and one you fight square.
