HOLZMANN BS 115N review

A saw that works both ways — horizontal for cutting bar to length, vertical for following a line.

Where we come out Two saws in one frame, from a sparse listing. Convenience over specialization.

The convertible argument

Most workshops need to cut bar to length ninety per cent of the time and follow a line the other ten. Buying two machines for that is hard to justify in a small space, and this is the compromise: horizontal when you want to walk away from a cut, vertical when you need to steer.

What the listing does not say

No cutting capacity, no band speed, no weight. That is thin for €396, and it is stated here rather than filled in.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • Both formats in one machine — the two jobs the other saws here split between them
  • Single phase, so it runs on an ordinary workshop supply
  • HOLZMANN is a machine-tool maker rather than a badge

Compromises

  • Not sold on the American or British stores at the time of checking
  • The listing is very brief — power, type and supply
  • 540 W means slow cutting in heavy section

The questions welders ask

How does converting between the two work?

The frame that carries the blade pivots or locks upright, and a table folds over the cutting zone so you can feed work by hand. It takes a minute or two. The compromise is that a convertible machine is rarely as comfortable in vertical mode as a dedicated vertical saw — the table is smaller and the throat shallower.

Is 540 W enough for steel?

For the sections a saw this size will take, yes, slowly. Band saw cutting is governed by the teeth clearing chips rather than by brute power, so more watts mainly buys the ability to hold that speed in bigger stock. The practical limit here is capacity, not motor.
