OPTIMUM OPTIsaw SP13V review

A transportable mitre band saw with a stepless speed control — precision without a factory floor.

Where we come out The precision option at this size, and priced like one.

Where it sits

Between the €150 hobby saws and the 400 V industrial machines. What you get for the difference is a stepless speed control, a proper swivel range and a build that stays accurate — and what you do not get is capacity, which stays modest.

The material note

OPTIMUM names round, square and rectangular solid stock. Thin-wall tube is not in that list, and it is the harder case: it needs a fine-pitch band so that at least three teeth are in the wall at all times, or the tooth catches and strips.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • Stepless speed adjustment, not two or three fixed steps
  • Swivels to 60°, which covers frame corners and bracing
  • Quiet operation is named in the specification

Compromises

  • €620, and it remains a small-capacity machine
  • Not sold on the American or British stores at the time of checking
  • The published material list is solids — thin-wall tube needs a fine band

The questions welders ask

Why pay for stepless speed rather than steps?

Because the correct band speed depends on both the material and the section. Two or three fixed steps force you to round to the nearest, and rounding upwards blunts teeth. Stepless control lets you match the speed to what the saw is actually cutting, which is the difference between a band lasting a year and a season.

Does the 60° swivel cover what I need?

For frames, yes. Most mitre work is 45° or less; 60° gives you the acute corners of braces and trusses without turning the workpiece round in the vice. What matters as much is that the vice holds firmly at those angles — an unsupported piece at 60° will creep.
