One blade, most work

For a workshop cutting a mixture of tube and bar, 8/12 is the pitch that stays on the saw. Fit the fine or coarse blades for the jobs that demand them.

Feed light, always

A band saw cuts at the rate its teeth can clear chips. Pushing harder does not speed it up; it strips teeth. That single habit does more for blade life than the brand on the box.

The questions welders ask

If I buy one pitch, which should it be?

8/12, for most workshops. It keeps enough teeth in a 3 mm (0.12 in) wall to be safe and still clears chips well enough in 20 mm bar to be usable. The right pitch always beats the compromise — but the compromise beats changing blades so rarely that you cut everything with whatever is fitted.

How long should a blade last?

Longer than most people get, because most blades die of stripped teeth rather than wear. Correct pitch, correct speed, light feed and a proper break-in routinely triple the life of a blade — and all four cost nothing.
