Pitch is chosen by the thinnest section

This is the single rule that decides band saw blade selection, and it is the one most people learn by stripping teeth off an expensive blade.

Specialist makers

Sägeband-Manufaktur makes bands and little else. On a consumable where weld quality of the bi-metal joint decides blade life, that focus tends to show.

The questions welders ask

Why does thin wall need a finer pitch?

Because of the three-teeth rule. If the wall is 2 mm (0.08 in) thick and the teeth are 4 mm (0.16 in) apart, a single tooth is in the cut at a time — it catches on the far edge, and either the tooth or the workpiece loses. Finer pitch means several teeth share the load, and the cut stays controlled.

Can one blade do both tube and bar?

Imperfectly. A 10/14 blade cuts solid bar slowly but safely; a 6–10 blade cuts bar quickly and destroys itself on thin tube. If you must own one, the finer pitch is the safer compromise — and if you cut a lot of both, own two.
