Telwin T-Arc 214 review

Sold as a complete kit with an auto-darkening helmet — which is how a first welder should be sold, and almost never is.

Where we come out Expensive for a stick machine, and the only one here you can use the day it arrives.

At €353 the T-Arc 214 costs nearly four times the cheapest machine on this page. It is also the only one that arrives ready to weld, and for a first purchase that is worth more than the price gap suggests.

The helmet is the point

Every other machine here needs, at minimum, a helmet before you can strike an arc. That purchase is where beginners economize, and it is the wrong place: the arc damages eyes in seconds, and a helmet is the one piece of equipment on this site that protects a part of you that does not repair. Having one in the box removes the temptation to « just tack it quickly » without.

It will not be the helmet you would choose on its own — kit helmets are modest — and it is a helmet, on day one, which is what matters.

As a machine

Two hundred amps, MMA and DC TIG, electrodes up to 4 mm (0.16 in) including basic, stainless and cast iron. Four protection systems are named individually: over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current and thermostatic. That is more informative than the usual « fully protected », and the voltage ones matter most in practice — a long extension lead or a rural supply is what kills inverters.

Telwin has built welding machines in Italy since 1963 and maintains a European service network. As with its Telmig on our MIG page, part of the price is the existence of somewhere to send it.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • A helmet in the box: the first thing every beginner has to buy separately, and the one nobody should skimp on
  • Four protection systems named individually rather than as « protected »
  • An Italian manufacturer with a European service network, since 1963

Compromises

  • €353 — the most expensive stick machine here by a wide margin
  • Not sold on the British or American stores at the time of checking
  • The helmet in a kit is rarely the helmet you would choose on its own

The questions welders ask

Is a kit helmet good enough?

Good enough to start safely, and rarely what you would pick separately. Kit helmets are usually fixed shade with a modest optical class, which is fine for stick welding at a steady current and tiring over an afternoon. The value is that you are not tempted to strike an arc « just once » without one — which is how people give themselves arc eye on their first evening.

What do the four protections actually protect?

The machine, mostly. Over- and under-voltage guard the inverter against a poor supply or a long extension lead; over-current against a dead short at the holder; the thermostat against your own enthusiasm. On a site or a farm, where the supply is whatever the building offers, the first two are the ones that decide whether the welder survives its second year.
