  • Publishes the material range the pitch is for — 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in) sheet, solid pipe and profile under 4 in
  • Publishes the body thickness, 0.9 mm (0.04 in), which decides whether the blade wanders or snaps
  • A 14 TPI pitch is for thin and medium work; solid bar wants a coarser blade and this hub says so

Best for: Cutting 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in) sheet and small pipe with a reciprocating saw

This hub’s buying tip is the three-teeth rule, and the honest difficulty with it is that most listings leave you to do the arithmetic. This one does it for you: 14 TPI, stated for sheet from 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in) and for solid pipe and profile under 4 in diameter. At 14 teeth to the inch the spacing is about 1.8 mm (0.07 in), so three teeth span five and a half millimeters — which is why the range starts where it does.

The rest of the specification is unusually complete for a recip blade. The body is 0.9 mm (0.04 in), which is a medium-heavy section that holds a line in metal without snapping at the shank. The cobalt content is given as 8 per cent rather than being left as “bi-metal”, and the teeth are set, which is what clears the kerf and keeps the blade from binding. Eleven saw brands are named against the 1/2 in universal shank.

Two limits. A 14 TPI blade is the wrong tool for solid bar, which wants a coarse pitch and fewer, bigger gullets — the maker’s own 8 TPI carbide blade on this shelf is that tool. And the bullets here are word for word those of the same maker’s 9 in blade, with one figure changed: pipe under 4 in here, under 7 in there.

The questions welders ask

How does the stated material range relate to the three-teeth rule?

It is the rule done for you. This hub’s buying tip is to keep at least three teeth in the cut: at 14 TPI the teeth are 1.8 mm (0.07 in) apart, so three of them span about 5.4 mm (0.21 in), and anything thinner than that risks a single tooth catching the far edge and stripping. TOLESA publishes 2 to 8 mm (0.08 to 0.31 in), which is slightly optimistic at the thin end and sensible through the middle — and it is a published range, which none of the five European band blades on this shelf offers.

Why does the 0.9 mm (0.04 in) body matter?

Because a reciprocating blade is a spring. Too thin and it flexes, wanders off the line and eventually snaps at the shank; too thick and it cannot follow a curve and loads the saw. At 0.9 mm (0.04 in) this is a medium-heavy body, which is the right choice for metal rather than for demolition — and it is the same thickness as two of the M42 band blades published on this shelf.
