Stamos Welding Group S-MMA-250PI.2 vs VECTOR WELDING ARC 200K

Does ten dollars buy anything meaningful at the bottom of the stick market?

At this price the machines are similar and the accessories are not. One arrives with eight meters of lead on both sides, which changes where you can work far more than fifty amps does.

A tick marks the better answer on that line only. Counting ticks does not decide the page — the two verdicts below do, because these machines answer different questions.

Which of the two, for which metal

S-MMA-250PI.2

No amazon.com listing was found for this one. We hold references for other markets but none for the United States, so it may not be buyable here — which is the first thing to weigh against anything below.

Buy the Stamos. Eight-meter leads let you leave the machine by the socket and take the holder to a gate, a fence or under a trailer — and 4 mm (0.16 in) electrodes join thick section in one pass.

Buy the Vector only if the ten dollars matters. It is a sound machine with the one feature that counts at this level — hot start — and nothing else to distinguish it.

The questions welders ask

Will a 230 V supply deliver 250 A?

Not for long. At that current a single-phase machine draws heavily, and a domestic 16 A circuit is the real limit rather than the welder. The 250 A figure means the machine will run 4 mm (0.16 in) electrodes; the socket decides how long.

Are long leads worth more than amps?

For most people, yes. Standard 2 to 3 m (7 to 10 ft) leads put the machine within a pace of the joint, which is fine on a bench and awkward everywhere else. Buying a longer set afterwards costs a significant fraction of the machine’s price.
