Güde GDS 150-15 review

Forty dollars, and the two wheels it arrives with are the first thing you should plan to replace.

Where we come out A sound €40 frame with wheels that belong in the bin, which is the normal state of this category.

Forty dollars for a 250 W bench grinder with ball-bearing spindles and a published grit pair — 36 and 60. Both of those are more than this price usually buys.

The wheels are the machine’s real specification

Every bench grinder in this class ships with grey wheels, and they are the part to think about first. They are hard: they glaze over rather than breaking down to expose fresh abrasive, and a glazed wheel stops cutting and starts rubbing. Rubbing means heat, and on a chisel or a drill bit, heat means a blue edge — steel that has lost its hardness and will not hold an edge again.

Güde publishing the grits (36 and 60) is honest, and it also tells you the limitation: both are coarse. This is a machine for deburring, dressing bolt ends, cleaning welds and rough shaping.

What is right about it at €40

Ball-bearing spindles rather than plain bushes, a stable foot, and a spark guard already fitted. Those are the parts that decide whether the machine runs true and how long it survives — and they are the ones that cannot be upgraded afterwards.

Where it stops

Two hundred and fifty watts is enough to grind steadily and not enough to lean on. If the wheel slows, back off — a stalled grinder throws work and burns wheels.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • Grit numbers published — 36 and 60 — rather than « coarse and fine »
  • A spark guard and a stable foot, both fitted

Compromises

  • 36 and 60 grit are both coarse: nothing here is a finishing wheel
  • 250 W will stall if you lean on it
  • Not sold on the American store at the time of checking

The questions welders ask

Why replace the wheels on a new machine?

Because the grey wheels supplied with almost every budget grinder are hard and coarse. They glaze quickly, and a glazed wheel rubs rather than cuts — which means heat, and heat is what ruins a cutting edge. A softer aluminum oxide wheel of around 60 to 80 grit costs a fraction of the machine and changes what it can do.

Can I sharpen tools on it?

Rough-shape them, yes. Sharpen them properly, not on 36 or 60 grit. Those grits remove metal fast and leave a scratch pattern that will not take a keen edge, and the heat they generate at 2,980 rpm draws the temper out of thin steel. For edge tools, either fit a fine white wheel or use the wet machine further down this page.
