Where we come out The cheapest AC/DC machine here with a real warranty behind it.
At €380 the INV185PACDC is one of the least expensive fully digital AC/DC machines on the page, and the argument for it is split between the electronics and the company.
The electronics
A 32-bit microprocessor running the control, a digital panel, HF start and fully adjustable pulse. Pulse is what makes thin material possible: instead of a steady current, the arc alternates between a peak that melts and a background that lets the pool cool a fraction, so you put in heat without warping the work. On 1 mm (0.04 in) stainless it is the difference between a bead and a hole.
AC gives you aluminum — the oxide layer needs alternating current to break — and the machine will run stick electrodes as well.
The company
Seven years, from IPO Technik-Handels GmbH, with a published street address in Friedrichshafen. In a category where a large share of listings are anonymous brands with no service address, this is a specification like any other. It is not a promise that the machine will not fail; it is a statement that there is somewhere to send it.
What is missing
No duty cycle at a stated ambient temperature. The current is 180 A rather than 200, which is a real difference only above roughly 5 mm (0.20 in) of steel — or 4 mm (0.16 in) of aluminum, which takes more current for the same thickness. And there is no published AC balance or frequency range, which is the control that separates the machines at €450 and above.
Sources
Current, processes, control, arc start, pulse and warranty come from the manufacturer’s published specification. Market availability was verified per market on the EAN; the reference was not live on the American store at the time of checking.

The questions welders ask
Is 180 A enough?
For everything most people TIG-weld, comfortably. A rough rule for steel is about 30 A per millimeter of thickness, so 180 A covers 5 to 6 mm (0.20 to 0.24 in) in a single pass — beyond that you would prepare an edge and run more than one pass anyway. Aluminum needs more current than steel for the same thickness, so on aluminum treat it as a 4 mm (0.16 in) machine.
What does « fully digital » buy you over a machine with knobs?
Repeatability. A digital panel shows the number you set rather than the position of a pointer, which means you can write it down, hand it to someone else, and get the same weld. On a machine with analog dials, « three quarters of the way round » is not a setting anyone can reproduce, including you next month.
