metabo CS 22-355 review

A quick-clamp vice with continuous mitre adjustment — the vice is what decides whether the cut is square.

Where we come out The vice and the mitre range are the €60, and on tube they earn it.

What you are paying for

Not power — the Güde above it claims more watts. What this adds is a vice designed to hold awkward sections and a mitre adjustment that moves continuously rather than clicking between presets. On a saw, both of those are accuracy features.

Round tube is the test

Square stock clamps itself. Round tube rolls, and if it rolls the cut face comes out elliptical and out of square — visible immediately when you try to weld two ends together. A vice with a quick action and firm final clamp is what stops that, and it is the reason to spend above the entry level in this category.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • The vice adjusts continuously rather than in steps, so odd sections still clamp tight
  • Named for profiles, tube and bar rather than a vague « metal »
  • Metabo spares and service across Europe

Compromises

  • €60 more than the Güde for a similar cutting principle
  • Still abrasive: same sparks, same burr, same noise
  • Not sold on the American store at the time of checking

The questions welders ask

Why does the vice matter more than the motor?

Because everything downstream depends on the work not moving. Round tube is the hard case: it wants to roll under the disc, and a vice that lets it turn a degree gives you a cut face you will have to grind flat before it will weld. A quick-clamp vice that closes firmly on odd sections is what separates a saw you trust from one you fight.

Is continuous mitre adjustment useful?

On anything but 45° and 90°, yes. Detented saws give you the two common angles and nothing between; a frame with a five-sided corner or a brace at 30° needs the range. It also lets you correct: if a test cut comes out half a degree off, you can move it half a degree.
