Where we come out The cheapest complete setup here: machine, vice, and a published limit.
What it does well
Holes square to the face, repeatedly, in plate and section — which is what most metalwork needs and what a hand drill will never do. Five speeds cover the range from a 13 mm (0.51 in) bit in steel to small bits in aluminum, changed by moving the belt.
Where it stops
Fifty millimeters of quill travel and 500 W. Both point the same way: this is a machine for sheet, plate and box, not for boring through solid bar.

What it handles, and what it will not
Strengths
A machine vice included, which is not optional equipment on a drill press
Published quill travel, which many listings omit

Compromises
50 mm (1.97 in) of travel: thick stock needs repositioning mid-hole
Five fixed speeds, changed by moving a belt

The questions welders ask
Why is quill travel the number to check?
Because it sets how deep a hole you can drill without moving the workpiece. Fifty millimeters means anything thicker has to be repositioned mid-hole — and repositioning is exactly what a drill press exists to avoid, since the second setting is never quite the first. For plate and box section it is ample; for solid bar it is not.
Is a vice really necessary?
It is the difference between drilling and injury. A bit breaking through the far side of a plate grabs, and an unclamped workpiece becomes a spinning blade at chest height. Every hole on a drill press should be drilled with the work clamped — which is why having a vice in the box matters more than it sounds.
