Bosch PBD 40 review

Ninety millimeters of quill travel — nearly twice the entry machines, and the figure that decides deep holes.

Where we come out The one to buy if you drill anything thick. The travel is the specification.

Travel over power

Seven hundred and ten watts is mid-range here; 90 mm (3.54 in) of quill travel is not. Depth in one plunge is what separates a press that drills solid bar from one that drills plate, and it is the specification most listings quietly omit.

The clamp

Bosch names a quick clamp that holds round workpieces. Round stock is the case where drilling goes wrong — it rolls, the bit wanders, and at break-through it snatches. A clamp designed for it is worth more than another hundred watts.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • 90 mm (3.54 in) of travel, against 50 mm (1.97 in) on the entry machines
  • Digital readout of speed and depth, not just speed
  • A clamp designed to hold round stock, which is the awkward case

Compromises

  • €250 for 710 W — you are buying travel and electronics
  • Not sold on the American store at the time of checking
  • A drill press for the bench rather than a floor-standing machine

The questions welders ask

What does 90 mm (3.54 in) of travel change?

It nearly doubles the depth you can drill in one plunge. On 50 mm (1.97 in) machines, anything thicker than about 40 mm (1.57 in) means stopping, raising the table, and re-entering the hole — and the second entry is never perfectly aligned with the first, which shows as a stepped or bellied bore. Ninety millimeters covers most solid bar a bench press will meet.

Why does the depth readout matter?

Because blind holes need to stop at a depth, and a scale on the quill is read at an angle in bad light. A digital depth display makes a 12 mm (0.47 in) blind hole repeatable across twenty pieces — which matters for tapped holes, where drilling through is a scrapped part.

What buyers actually choose

Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 100.
