Rigidity is the whole game

Chatter comes from flex between tool and work. A 16 mm (0.63 in) shank in a matched post is several times stiffer than a 10 mm (0.39 in) one, and that shows as a better finish at the same depth of cut.

Find the insert code now

Before the first insert is worn, work out its designation (the code stamped on it, such as CCMT or DCMT with size digits). Ordering replacements by code is trivial; ordering them by photograph is not.

The questions welders ask

Is a bigger shank always better?

Only if it fits and reaches center height. Stiffness rises steeply with shank size, so a 16 mm (0.63 in) tool chatters far less at depth than a 10 mm (0.39 in) one. But a shank too large for the post cannot be used at all, and one that cannot be brought down to center height is worse than useless.

Five inserts — is that enough to start?

For a while. Each insert has several usable corners, so five inserts is perhaps twenty cutting edges. What matters more is knowing the insert designation before you need more: buying replacements for an unspecified insert means matching it by eye, which is a poor way to buy precision tooling.
