Seven holders, fourteen inserts, eight wrenches, a 12 mm (0.47 in) shank and 40Cr alloy steel: on the face of it a well-equipped kit, and the alloy is correctly named rather than being called cemented carbide as it is on three other pages here. Fourteen inserts for seven holders means a spare edge for each, which is the difference between a chipped insert and a stopped job.

Two things about the page are worth more than its specification. The contents bullet adds up to twenty-nine items under a heading that says twenty-one — seven plus fourteen plus eight — which is reconcilable if the headline ignores the wrenches. And one of the seven holder codes it lists, SDNCN12120H07, is not a valid designation: ISO codes carry four digits for a 12 by 12 mm (0.47 in) shank, not five. The real holder is an SDNCN1212H07.

The reason that matters is what else carries it. The LYMMIYTC kit further down this shelf lists the same seven designations in a different order, including the identical five-digit error, and has the same twenty-one-versus-twenty-nine arithmetic. Here, the misspelled code is also the listing’s own manufacturer reference. Neither page mentions the other, and nothing on either says who made what.

The questions welders ask

Twenty-one pieces or twenty-nine?

The contents bullet lists seven holders, fourteen inserts and eight wrenches, which is twenty-nine items, under a title that says 21Pcs. The likeliest reading is that the headline counts holders and inserts and ignores the wrenches — twenty-one exactly. It is worth saying because the same discrepancy, in the same form, appears on the LYMMIYTC kit further down this shelf.

What is wrong with SDNCN12120H07?

A digit. ISO holder codes are structured: SDNCN is the clamping and shape, then the shank in millimeters — 1212 for 12 by 12 — then the length class and the insert size, H07. SDNCN12120H07 has five digits where four belong, so it does not resolve to a real holder. SDNCN1212H07 does, and it is almost certainly what is in the box. The reason to point it out is that the same misspelling appears on another brand’s kit on this shelf and is this listing’s own reference number.
