What happens without a spark arrestor?

A live particle can reach the filter media, which is fibrous and loaded with combustible metal dust. That is a fire in a device strapped to your waist and ducted to your face. The arrestor is a mesh that quenches particles before they arrive — a component with a single, unglamorous, non-negotiable job.

How do I know when to replace it?

When the mesh is deformed, clogged or holed. It is inspected rather than scheduled: look at it when you change the pre-filter. If light does not pass through it evenly, it is restricting airflow as well as failing to protect.
