Diameter is not a suggestion

The bore of a contact tip is machined for one wire size. It is the single component in a MIG system with no tolerance for approximation.

Change the roller too

Drive rollers are also diameter-specific, and usually reversible with a groove at each size. Changing wire diameter means changing the tip and turning or swapping the roller — do both, or the wire feeds badly whatever the tip.

Every figure above comes from the manufacturer’s published specification for this reference. Fields the listing does not publish are left out rather than estimated. Market availability was verified per market on the EAN.

The questions welders ask

What happens if the tip is the wrong size?

Too small and the wire jams — the feed motor slips or the wire buckles behind the rollers into a bird’s nest. Too large and the electrical contact becomes intermittent, so the arc stutters and wanders. Neither fault looks like a tip problem from the front of the machine, which is why both waste an evening.

Should I keep both sizes?

If you keep both wire diameters, yes — and label them. Contact tips are stamped with the size, but the numbers are tiny and worn tips end up in the same tin. A pair of labeled boxes costs nothing and prevents the commonest self-inflicted feeding fault.
