Four processes in a 6.8 kg case, and the only machine here whose lower limit — 20 A — is published as well as its ceiling.

The bottom line The most versatile small machine here, and the one that states the number that actually constrains thin work.

The 160 M is STAHLWERK’s compact four-process inverter: MIG/MAG under gas, gasless flux-cored, MMA stick and DC lift TIG, in a case weighing 6.8 kg. At €220 it sits just above the crowd of anonymous 3-in-1 machines, and it earns the difference with one published number.

The number nobody else prints

Almost every listing in this category gives a maximum current. This one gives a range: 20 to 160 A. The lower figure is the one that decides whether you can weld 0.8 mm sheet without punching holes in it, and the fact that it is published at all is a reasonable sign that it was measured. If you are repairing bodywork, exhaust or thin box section, the bottom of the range is the specification you are buying.

At the other end, 160 A is enough for 5 mm steel in a single pass and for thicker material in several. Beyond that you are into multi-pass work with proper preparation, which is a technique question rather than a machine question — but the machine is the limit if you want one-pass fillets on heavy section.

Four processes, honestly ranked

The MIG side is the machine’s real job, and it is synergic: set the current, the feed speed follows. Gasless flux-cored is a polarity swap away, which is what makes outdoor work possible. Stick welding is genuinely useful — it is the process for rusty, painted or outdoor steel, and the inverter that drives the wire drives an electrode without complaint.

Lift TIG is the one to be honest about. There is no high-frequency start, so you touch the tungsten to the work and lift to strike. It works, it contaminates the tungsten more than an HF start does, and it is fine for the occasional stainless bracket. It is not a reason to skip buying a TIG machine if TIG is what you want to do.

Questions people actually ask

Is a 4-in-1 machine a compromise?

Less than it used to be. The inverter that makes a MIG arc will make a stick arc with a change of socket, so the extra processes cost the manufacturer very little. Where the compromise is real is TIG: lift arc means you touch the tungsten to the work to start, which contaminates the tip more readily than a high-frequency start. It is genuinely usable for occasional stainless work and it is not a substitute for a TIG set.

Why does the minimum current matter more than the maximum?

Because the maximum is limited by your supply and your patience, while the minimum is limited by the machine. Car-body steel of 0.8 mm needs something close to 30 A; a machine whose lowest setting is 50 A will blow through it whatever your technique. A published lower limit of 20 A is what makes thin-sheet work possible.
