Why the setting matters

Flow that is set once and preserved is flow you can trust. Resetting the regulator every session means guessing, and guessing upward wastes gas and pulls air into the shield.

Any regulator with more fittings needs the leak check on all of them. Two minutes with washing-up liquid.

The questions welders ask

Should I close the cylinder valve after every session?

For long breaks, yes — the cylinder valve is the real safety isolation, and a regulator left pressurized for months is a slow leak waiting to happen. Between sessions in the same week, an outlet shut-off preserves the setting and takes a second. Both habits, not one instead of the other.

Does an extra valve create a risk?

Every joint is a potential leak, so yes, marginally. The answer is the same soapy-water check on the new joints. In exchange you get a valve you will actually use, which beats a cylinder valve you leave open because it is stiff.
