One job, done quietly

A regulator that works is invisible. One that leaks costs you a full cylinder without a sound, and one that creeps upward in pressure wastes gas every weld.

Country connections differ

Cylinder thread standards vary across Europe, and an adaptor is not always legitimate. Check what your gas supplier fits before ordering — this is the one place where « it looked the same » is expensive.

The questions welders ask

Regulator, flowmeter, or both?

A regulator reduces cylinder pressure to working pressure; a flowmeter shows how many liters per minute are passing. Most welding regulators combine the two, with a second gauge calibrated in l/min. What matters is that you can set flow — typically 8 to 12 l/min for MIG — rather than guessing from a pressure figure.

How do I check for leaks?

Soapy water on every joint, with the bottle open and the torch closed. Bubbles mean a leak. This takes two minutes and it is the difference between a bottle lasting months and emptying itself overnight — the commonest and most expensive beginner’s mistake with shielding gas.
