Progression, not brute force

The temptation is to stay on 40 grit until the weld is flat and call it done. What you have then is a flat surface covered in deep scratches. Two more discs and five minutes make the difference between a repair and a finish.

On stainless, slow down

Heat is what turns stainless brown and ruins its corrosion resistance. Less speed, less pressure, more patience.

The questions welders ask

Why not just use one grit?

Because each grit only removes the scratches of the one before it. Starting at 40 removes the weld bead fast and leaves deep scratches; 60 and 80 remove those; 120 leaves a surface fine enough to paint or to polish further. Skipping steps means the deep scratches stay, and they show through paint.

How do I avoid burning stainless?

Lower the speed and keep the disc moving. Stainless conducts heat poorly, so it stays hot exactly where you are working and discolours in seconds. A grinder with speed control — several on this site have it — run at 5,000 to 7,000 rpm, with light pressure, is the answer.
