Low commitment

Thirty-seven euros answers the question of whether indexable tooling suits your machine and your work, before €95 does.

The small-lathe reality

Light machines cannot force a cut, so tool sharpness matters more than toughness. That is why HSS remains popular on small lathes long after it disappeared from industry.

The questions welders ask

Do cheap inserts cut noticeably worse?

They cut, and the difference shows in the finish and in how light a cut they will take. Premium inserts have a sharper, more consistent edge preparation, which matters most on a small, low-power lathe where you cannot force the cut. For learning and for roughing, budget inserts are entirely adequate.

Should I buy HSS tools instead at this price?

It is a real alternative. A blank of high-speed steel and a bench grinder will produce a tool sharper than any budget insert, at a fraction of the price — the cost is the skill and the time to grind it. Many small-lathe owners end up with both: indexable for speed, HSS for the finishing pass.
