  • ER4043 flows well and resists cracking — the general-purpose aluminum filler
  • 2.4 mm (0.09 in) matches the tungsten size most AC work uses
  • Aluminum oxidizes in storage: rods need keeping clean and dry

Same family as the MIG wire

ER4043 appears twice on this site — as MIG wire and as TIG rod — because it is the general-purpose aluminum filler in both processes. Silicon-alloyed, forgiving, crack-resistant.

Cleanliness is the technique

More aluminum TIG welds are ruined by contamination than by heat control. Clean base metal with a stainless brush kept only for aluminum, clean the rod, and weld promptly.

The questions welders ask

How do I choose filler rod diameter?

Match it roughly to the material thickness and to the tungsten you are running. On 2 to 4 mm (0.08 to 0.16 in) aluminum with a 2.4 mm (0.09 in) tungsten, a 2.4 mm (0.09 in) rod feeds naturally and adds metal at a sensible rate. Too thin a rod means constant feeding and a cold weld; too thick chills the pool each time it touches.

Do the rods need cleaning before use?

Yes. Aluminum grows an oxide skin in storage and picks up grease from handling, and both end up as porosity or black soot in the weld. Wipe rods with acetone before a session, keep them in a tube rather than loose in a drawer, and handle them with clean gloves.
