Quantity as a specification

Buying 185 rods changes how you weld: you stop rationing, you run practice beads on offcuts, and the work gets better for it. That is the honest argument for a 5 kg (11 lb) box over a 70-rod packet.

Keep them dry

A cardboard box on a concrete floor is the worst place for electrodes. Concrete wicks moisture upwards and cardboard does nothing to stop it — decant into a sealed container and the last rod welds like the first.

The questions welders ask

Do rutile electrodes need special storage?

Less than basic rods, and more than people think. Damp coatings produce porosity and an unstable arc, and rods that have sat in an unheated garage through a winter will weld noticeably worse. A sealed box with desiccant keeps them serviceable; a rod oven is for basic electrodes and for professionals.

How far does 5 kg (11 lb) go?

Roughly 185 rods at 350 mm (13.8 in). Each gives perhaps 250 mm (9.84 in) of bead once the stub is discarded, so call it 45 meters (148 ft) of weld — a gate, a trailer floor, a set of brackets, or several months of learning. It is a project quantity, not a lifetime one.
