Thin cuts better

A 1 mm (0.04 in) disc removes a third of the metal a 2.5 mm (0.10 in) one does, so it cuts faster for the same power and puts less heat into the work. For steel sections, it is the right choice.

The economics of not rationing

Twenty-five discs is a season for most workshops. What it really buys is the willingness to fit a new one halfway through a job, which is where the safety argument and the quality argument meet.

The questions welders ask

Are 1 mm (0.04 in) discs safe?

Yes, used correctly — they are the professional standard for cutting steel. What they will not tolerate is side loading: twisting the grinder in the cut, or letting the workpiece close on the disc, snaps them. Support the offcut, keep the cut open, and never use a cutting disc for grinding.

Why does buying in bulk make cutting safer?

Because a worn disc tempts you to push. When discs are scarce, people keep using them until the diameter has dropped so far that the cut is slow and the pressure high — which is when things break. At €0.48 each, changing a disc costs nothing worth thinking about.
