The ratio is the insight

Most people buy cutting discs and forget flap discs, then dress welds with the wrong tool. Three to one is close to how they are actually consumed.

Where premium abrasives show

In how flat the disc stays as it wears and how quickly it cuts under light pressure. Cheap discs tempt you to push, and pushing is what breaks discs.

The questions welders ask

What does a flap disc do that a grinding disc does not?

It sands rather than grinds. A flap disc is overlapping abrasive cloth leaves, so it removes material progressively and leaves a finished surface, where a rigid grinding disc gouges and leaves a coarse texture. For dressing a weld back flush, a flap disc does in one step what a grinding disc plus sanding would take two.

Is a premium abrasive brand worth it?

On cutting discs, measurably. Better bonded discs cut faster, stay flatter and wear more slowly, so the cost per cut can be lower despite the higher price per disc. On a hobby workload the difference is small; on a day of cutting it is obvious in your wrists as well as your bin.
