STAHLWERK Bench drill 800 W review

A cross-line laser to position the hole and a digital speed readout — the setting stops being a guess.

Where we come out The most powerful bench press here, with two aids that make correct settings easier to repeat.

Power where it is scarce

Eight hundred watts in a bench drill is generous — the machines around it run 450 to 550 W. Power is what holds the speed when a large bit loads up, and a press that bogs is one that grabs.

Two aids, honestly weighted

The laser positions; the punch mark still starts the hole. The digital readout makes the speed a number you can reuse. Neither is a substitute for clamping the work, which remains the one non-negotiable habit on a drill press.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • 800 W, the most powerful bench press in this batch
  • A digital speed setting you can read, note and return to
  • Cross-line laser for positioning without lowering the bit to check

Compromises

  • A laser is an aid, not a substitute for a center punch
  • No quill travel or chuck capacity published
  • Not sold on the American store at the time of checking

The questions welders ask

Is the laser genuinely useful or a gimmick?

Useful for positioning, provided it is calibrated and you still punch the center. It saves lowering the bit to check alignment on every hole, which on twenty holes is a real saving. What it cannot do is stop a bit wandering on entry — that is what a center punch mark is for, and no laser replaces it.

Why does a digital speed display matter?

Because it makes the setting reproducible. « The dial about a third round » is not a number; « 620 rpm » is, and it can be written on the job sheet next to the bit size. That is the same argument as a digital display on a welder, and it holds for the same reason.
