Three parts, three lifetimes

The contact tip wears fastest — it is a copper hole carrying current to a moving wire. The gas nozzle gets clogged with spatter and eventually cracks. The diffuser lasts longest. That is why sets contain several tips and one or two of the rest.

A cheap fix for an expensive-looking fault

A worn tip mimics a machine fault convincingly: erratic feed, wandering arc, sticking wire. Keeping a set on the shelf turns a lost evening into a two-minute change.

The questions welders ask

How do I know when a contact tip is worn?

The hole goes oval and slightly larger, and the arc starts to wander — spatter increases, the wire occasionally sticks, and the bead moves about. It happens long before the tip looks damaged. If a machine that welded cleanly last month is misbehaving at the same settings, change the tip before touching a dial.

MB15 or MB25 — how do I tell?

By the torch, not by the machine. The number is usually stamped or printed on the torch neck or handle, and MB25 is physically larger, rated for more current and takes different nozzles and diffusers. Machines are sold with either, and the same machine model can ship with different torches in different years.
