Scheppach DP19Vario review

Stepless speed from 440 rpm — no belt to move, and a bottom end low enough for a 20 mm (0.79 in) bit.

Where we come out The convenience that makes correct speeds actually happen.

The friction argument

A belt-change press has every speed available in theory. In practice people drill at whichever speed the belt was left on, because opening the head costs a minute. A dial removes the excuse — and the result is bits that last and holes that are round.

What is not published

Quill travel, the figure that decides how deep a hole you can drill in one plunge. The cheaper Scheppach on this page publishes 50 mm (1.97 in); this one publishes none.

What it handles, and what it will not

Strengths

  • Stepless speed control — no belt changes, and any speed in the range
  • 440 rpm at the bottom, lower than the stepped machines here
  • A published range rather than a step count

Compromises

  • €228, more than twice the entry machines
  • No quill travel published
  • Not sold on the American store at the time of checking

The questions welders ask

Is stepless worth twice the price of a stepped press?

It depends on how often you change speed. With a belt, changing means opening the head and moving it by hand — so most people leave it where it is and drill everything at the wrong speed. A dial removes that friction, and using the right speed is what makes bits last. If you drill one material with one bit size, it is money wasted.

What does 440 rpm let me do?

Run large bits in steel. Below about 500 rpm you can drive a 16 to 20 mm (0.63 to 0.79 in) bit without cooking its edge, provided the machine has the torque to hold the speed. That is the top end of what a bench press is asked to do, and machines whose lowest speed is 600 or more cannot get there.
