Why this is the first purchase, not the last

The arc emits ultraviolet strong enough to burn the cornea in seconds and to sunburn skin at a meter. A welding machine without a helmet is not a partial setup, it is an unusable one — and at €23 the helmet is a rounding error on any machine on this site.

What to check when it arrives

Look through the lens at a bright light: it should be evenly tinted, without ripples or dark patches. Test the switch by striking an arc on scrap — the cartridge should darken before you register the flash. If it does not, return it; that is the one fault a cheap helmet must not have.

The questions welders ask

What does a helmet at €23 give up?

Usually optical clarity and switching speed, neither of which this listing states. A slower cartridge lets more flashes through before darkening, and a lower optical class means distortion and uneven shade across the lens — which is tiring rather than dangerous. What it does not give up is the darkening itself: even a cheap cartridge blocks the ultraviolet and infrared that damage eyes.

Is a hand shield ever acceptable?

It protects your eyes, and it occupies a hand you need for the work. That is why people lift them, glance at the arc and strike « just this once » — and arc eye follows. At €23 for an auto-darkening helmet, there is no argument left for the hand shield.
